The Future Of Scientific Research (2)

The lecture, attended by a number of Sheikhs and officials, was delivered by Nobel Laureate in Physics Professor David Gross – with the participation of other distinguished scientists – alongside Emirati physicist Dr Ahmed Eid Al Mheiri.

The lecture addressed the topic of modern scientific research, its multifaceted nature, its classifications, and ways to accelerate its progress through modern research institutions, as well as the types of scientific research that have the greatest impact. It also touched on the advanced and stimulating scientific environment available in the UAE, which enables the country to assume a regional leadership role in fundamental sciences and reap their benefits.

The session highlighted that modern history is, at its core, the history of scientific and technological advancement. Throughout human history, transformative changes have often been driven by sudden scientific discoveries that stimulate progress across multiple fields. While such transformations are frequently attributed to applied or technological sciences, they ultimately originate in basic scientific research – the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake.

Professor Gross emphasised during the Majlis session that the starting point for any scientific advancement lies in human curiosity and the desire to seek answers to the profound questions posed by what surrounds us.

Gross commended the steps taken by the UAE to promote science, noting that the country is on the right path through initiatives that both support and attract innovators, while providing the resources and infrastructure they need to realise their ambitions.
He commented, “You have many opportunities that promise a better future and they are undoubtedly the product of your leadership’s vision and support.”

Dr Ahmed Eid Al Mheiri, Assistant Professor of Physics at New York University Abu Dhabi, also contributed to the Majlis session, underscoring the importance of embracing and nurturing young talent. He noted that, with the support of the UAE’s leadership, he is developing programmes to promote the natural sciences and empower younger generations of Emiratis.

Dr Al Mheiri highlighted the strategic role the UAE plays in connecting leading physics schools and academic centres across East and West, before sharing insights from his own personal and academic journey.

The lecture will be broadcast tomorrow at 6:45pm on Emirates TV and other local television channels, as well as available to view on the Majlis Mohamed bin Zayed YouTube Channel.
